- Welcome to Ashland,
Oregon. The town is situated almost at the exact
convergence of the Cascade Mountains and the Klamath-Siskiyou
Mountains.
-
-
- The City of Ashland is a
technology leader by offering high-speed fiber optic Internet connections to
most of the community, making it the ideal home for many telecommuters.
During the summer, the Ashland Community Band
gives free performances at the
Lithia Park Butler Band Shell every Thursday evening. Having it's
beginnings in 1868, it may be the oldest continuously performing city
band in the United States!
-
- Ashland real estate is
valued at a premium
because of our beautiful location, access to the arts and education, the
4-season weather, and the community's continued focus on measured
growth. You won't find a Costco, Wal-Mart or giant building
supply store in Ashland (although they are all within 20 minutes of
town). The City of Ashland is committed to filling in the empty
spaces rather than expanding its boundaries.

There is a very active retirement community in place. Southern
Oregon University has a special program for seniors called Osher
Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI).
The OLLI philosophy is to provide, at a modest cost, academic
experiences for all its members, regardless of previous educational
background. Anyone of retirement age who subscribes to the spirit and
purpose of OLLI is welcome to become a member. The annual membership
fee is about $100.

In October, 2005, MONEY Magazine chose Ashland
as the "Best
Place to Retire." Nearby Medford was given this honor
two years ago.
-
- Schools:
The demographics of Ashland have been
changing, partly because of the increasing costs of real estate.
That is, we have more people moving here without children. As a
result, the Ashland School District recently closed two older
elementary schools. But, if you have children of school age,
you'd have a hard time finding a better location for them to go
school. A bond measure was passed in 2007 to update and
modernize our remaining schools.
-
- The community sets such a high priority
on education, that since the Oregon property tax initiative of 1990,
they have continually supported a special city tax levy to fund after-school activities throughout the district, including sports and
performing arts. Ashland School District was alone in the state
at having this community support until both Portland and Eugene passed
similar levies recently. This support has allowed the school district to keep
general fund money in the classroom; the district has been able
to retain programs and keep classroom sizes smaller than most
districts in Oregon. The community also recently passed a school
building improvement bond measure. The results are that average S.A.T. scores
and participation are among the highest in the state.
